Dr. Andrea Anderson

In your own words, what is your role as a school board member?

As a school board member, it is my responsibility to work with my fellow school board members to set and review policy, hire the superintendent and to approve and set the budget yearly. It is our responsibility to make sure our policies are up to date and follow state & federal law and to be good stewards of our constituents’ tax dollars to effectively run the system while proactively preparing for the future to serve the students and citizens of Bedford County.

Why did you want to become a member of the school board?

I was appointed to the board in July 2010. My daughter was five at the time and was about to start kindergarten. I wanted to become more involved in my community and thought this was a good way to do so and serve my community while being involved in my daughter's education.

Outside of serving on the school board, what is your full-time job, and how long have you been in your present work?

I am a veterinarian at Shelbyville Animal Hospital where I partner with my stepfather. I graduated in 1995 from Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. I practiced in Las Vegas, NV, after graduation and moved back home in 1997 to join the practice with my stepfather where I practice small animal medicine.

Tell us about your family.

I have been married to Bill Anderson (county commissioner) since 1998. We are both graduates of SCHS. We have one daughter, Julia, who is a 2023 graduate of SCHS as well. She is currently a sophomore at MTSU.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

My job keeps me very busy during work time and outside of work time. I do love to attend TPAC Broadway shows with my daughter and mom and sister. We are season ticket holders and look forward to our time at the theater. I also serve on the board of directors at Heritage South Community Credit Union.

How many years have you served as a school board member?

I was appointed to the board in July of 2010 and have been re-elected since then to now.

From your time serving on the school board, what are you most proud of?

I am so proud to be part of a board that works so well together for a common goal. We may disagree at times, but we work well to always keep the best interests of our children at the forefront of our decisions. I am also very proud to have been a part of the construction of a new Cascade High School and new Cartwright Elementary School as well as numerous additions to some of our other schools. We have done a great job of trying to look toward the future but still have a ways to go.

What area or areas of Bedford County do you represent?

I serve the sixth district of Bedford County which includes the area of Eastside Elementary School and surrounding areas of the city/county square and Depot Street over to Madison St.  Link to Bedford County district maps.
